Urgent funding campaign launched to restore historic Docklands fireboat

Fire fighter, life saver, history maker

An urgent campaign launches today to raise funds to restore Massey Shaw, the London fireboat that played a key role in fighting fires during the Blitz in World War II and helped evacuate more than 600 troops from the Dunkirk Nord beaches during the Dunkirk evacuation.

Next May marks the 85th anniversary of Dunkirk, and the Massey Shaw Education Trust is seeking to raise £50,000 to ensure she is operational in time and able to continue to share her history with future generations.

David Rogers, chief executive of the charitable trust, says, “Massey Shaw’s dramatic water pumping displays have been seen at multiple celebratory events, including the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012 and the Royal River Salute in 2015.

“Massey Shaw is now approaching 90 years old, and she requires care, engineering skill and historic study and investigation to keep her operational. The money will help us replace worn engine, crankshaft and gearbox components and enable us to ensure she is in fine fettle to mark next year’s anniversary in her famously impressive way!”

Exceptional record of service

Built in 1935, Massey Shaw, is renowned for her valour in World War II as a Dunkirk Little Ship, credited with saving 600 Allied troops from the beaches. She then continued her service throughout the London Blitz, bravely fighting fires and pumping water from the Thames to locations where the mains water supply was damaged, saving countless lives and historic structures. Her story reflects the resilience and indomitable spirit of the British public during those challenging times.

David says the Trust can offer corporate supporters a number of sponsorship benefits, including branding opportunities, exclusive access to events, recognition on the Trust’s website, and volunteering opportunities for staff, together with the satisfaction of knowing they have helped preserve a vital part of the UK’s history.

Community asset

Now moored in West India Dock, Massey Shaw provides an unforgettable venue for small corporate events and activities, and is an unrivalled educational resource for school groups keen to learn first-hand how London survived the Blitz, and to understand how she and dozens of other small ships played an essential role in the evacuation of Dunkirk.
