The Ship’s Bell and Baptisms? – Crew Space Stories episode 2

In this edition of Crew Space Stories, David Rogers details the history of our ships bell on board Massey Shaw Fireboat.

The ship’s bell was issued to all fireboats, including Massey Shaw when it was commissioned in 1935.

What is a ship’s bell used for?

The ship’s bell is an integral part of any vessel. Here are a few typical uses for the ship’s bell and one you may not expect!

  • Telling the time (there are eight bells, one for each half-hour of a four-hour watch)
  • Calling for specific crew members
  • A warning signal to other vessels
  • For baptisms!?
